2012 Southwest/South Central Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths Workshop

More than 140 traffic safety advocates attended the first joint Southwest/South Central Toward Zero Deaths Workshop held on April 19, 2012, in New Ulm. Data presented gave attendees a snapshot of what a typical severe crash looks like and how these types of crashes can be prevented in the future using a combination of the four “Es” (education, enforcement, engineering, and emergency medical and trauma services).  

The event's keynote speaker was Rick Moldenhauer from the Minnesota Department of Human Services, who spoke about opiates and drugged/impaired driving. To complement Moldenhauer's presentation, the State Patrol discussed the statewide Drug Recognition Evaluator program. Secretary of State Mark Ritchie shared the story of losing his daughter in an impaired driving crash and how other lives were saved through the gift of organ donation. Secretary Ritchie’s testimony reminded those present how important traffic safety work is and how those efforts save lives.
